An underground parking garage


(Shenzhen, China) Underground parking garages need high quality 24-hour lighting which should be reliable. Therefore, the power consumption could be very high if we do not choose proper lighting for them, and the lights may be broken and cause accidents. Fluorescent lighting was used for lighting in parking garages in the past, and this type of lighting has many drawbacks, for instance, its lighting quality is not good because it is always flickering when it is lit, and it is not very reliable, because it can be easily broken. Although it is called energy saving lighting, it is not real energy saving. This case is about an underground parking garage in Shenzhen City, China. They are searching for energy efficient lighting with reliable quality to meet the strict lighting requirements. They have considered fluorescent lighting, but it was denied because it may durable enough to light for 24 hours without any rest. LED lighting becomes the only one lighting solution which can meet their requirements; they decided to employ LED lighting.


As the garage considered possible LED lighting options to be installed, they developed a set of requirements for any potential solution. They wanted a solution that would meet or exceed the light output and light quality of conventional fluorescent lighting and they wanted a solution that could be easily installed and maintained easily.


Trial Installation

The garage considered several types of LED lighting. A set of selected products such as LED tube lights and LED bulbs were installed in the garage, and the garage collected opinions and rankings from employers. They also measured light levels for each installation.


The local electricity supplier calculated energy use and savings for the various options being tested. Based on these calculations and the inputs from the various stakeholders, the FOBSUN FFL-T5-P1164-96W-H LED tube light was chosen as the final solution.



The garage installed around 100 FOBSUN FFL-T5-P1164-96W-H LED tube lights throughout the garage as shown in the table below. The table also shows the hours of operation for each installation.

Business Case Analysis

The garage conducted an analysis to determine the economic feasibility of replacing the existing fluorescent lighting with FOBSUN LED lighting. This analysis considered several factors including,


*Energy savings

*Capital cost

*Maintenance savings

*Reduction of hazardous materials


Energy Savings

Energy savings was the original driver for this project, and the savings were expected to be significant using the latest LED lighting technology. Each of the FFL-T5-P1164-96W-H LED tube lights consumes 15 watts and no ballast needed. Using the hours of operation and fluorescent wattage from the table above, the energy savings are as follows:


Fluorescent lamps: 34,164kwh/year

FOBSUN FFL-T5-P1164-96W-H LED tube light: 13,140kwh/year

Savings: 21,024kwh/year


The garage pays $0.17/kwh for its electricity yielding an annual savings of $3574.


Capital Cost

The capital cost of the LED tube lights for this project was $6,800


Maintenance Savings

The long service life of the FFL-T5-P1164-96W-H LED tube lights eliminates the maintenance cost associated with changing light bulbs (the replacement bulb cost and the associated labor). The approximate maintenance cost savings is $2,000/year using very conservative estimates for the labor and lamp costs.



Using the estimates above, the calculated time to payback for this project is slightly more than 1.2 years. Using only the energy savings, the time to payback is slightly more than 1.9 years.


Future Plans

The garage is very pleased with the light quality and the appearance of the FFL-T5-P1164-96W-H LED tube lights, and has identified additional applications for the product in order to increase its energy savings.
