LED Lighting Case Study – Shanghai, China

 A Supermarket

 

(Shanghai, China) Power consumption of commercial lighting accounts for a large percentage in total lighting power consumption in China. How to change the situation and find energy efficient alternatives for conventional lighting is now a top urgent topic under the background of world wide energy shortage. Some supermarkets are pioneers who are trying hard to practice in this field. Now they are searching for energy efficient alternatives that they could use to reduce electricity usage and costs. There is a supermarket in Shanghai, China conducting an investigation through the staff and customers to collect their opinions about switching conventional lighting to energy efficient lighting. And LED lighting becomes their best option.

 

The supermarket mainly used conventional fluorescent tubes before the utilization of LED lighting, a significant number of T8 fixtures using fluorescent tubes. Considering the uneven and flickering light that conventional fluorescent tubes emit as well the toxic materials they contains, these lights are the first candidates to be upgraded. The supermarket staff initially identified more than 80 T8 fluorescent tubes across the supermarket.

 

As the staff considered possible LED lighting options to replace the existing lights, they developed a set of requirements for any potential solution. They wanted a solution that would meet or exceed the light output and light quality of the existing lights and they wanted a solution that could be easily installed without having to replace the existing fixtures.

 

Trial Installation

The supermarket considered several brands of LED lighting. A set of selected products were installed in working fixtures in the supermarket, and the staff members collected opinions and rankings from customers. They also measured light levels for each installation.

 

The local electricity supplier calculated energy use and savings for the various options being tested. Based on these calculations and the inputs from the various stakeholders, the FOBSUN FFL-T8-P1500-81W-H LED tube light was chosen to replace the conventional fluorescent tubes.

 

Installation

The supermarket installed around 80 FOBSUN FFL-T8-P1500-81W-H LED tube lights throughout the supermarket as shown in the table below. The table also shows the hours of operation for each installation.

Business Case Analysis

The supermarket conducted an analysis to determine the economic feasibility of replacing the existing fluorescent lighting with FOBSUN LED lighting. This analysis considered several factors including,

 

*Energy savings

*Capital cost

*Maintenance savings

*Reduction of hazardous materials

 

Energy Savings

Energy savings was the original driver for this project, and the savings were expected to be significant using the latest LED lighting technology. Each of the FFL-T8-P1500-81W-H LED tube lights consumes 25 watts and no ballast needed. Using the hours of operation and fluorescent wattage from the table above, the energy savings are as follows:

 

Fluorescent lamps: 21,462kwh/year

FOBSUN FFL-T8-P1500-81W-H LED tube light: 10,950kwh/year

Savings: 10,512kwh/year

 

The supermarket pays $0.17/kwh for its electricity yielding an annual savings of $1787.

 

Although not included in the analysis, the use of LED lighting also significantly reduces the heat produced by the light fixtures thereby reducing the load on the air-conditioning system and further reducing the electricity usage.

 

Capital Cost

The capital cost of the LED tube lights for this project was $3,200

 

Maintenance Savings

The long service life of the FFL-T8-P1500-81W-H LED tube lights eliminates the maintenance cost associated with changing light bulbs (the replacement bulb cost and the associated labor). The approximate maintenance cost savings is $1,000/year using very conservative estimates for the labor and lamp costs.

 

Payback

Using the estimates above, the calculated time to payback for this project is slightly more than 1.1 years. Using only the energy savings, the time to payback is slightly less than 1.8 years.

 

Future Plans

The supermarket is very pleased with the light quality and the appearance of the FFL-T8-P1500-81W-H LED tube lights, and has identified additional applications for the product in order to increase its energy savings.
