LED Lighting Case Study – Sydney, Australia

(Sydney, Australia) Sydney is famous for its beautiful scene which attracts tens of thousand visitors every year from all over the world. Therefore there are many luxurious hotels in Sydney, which accommodate the visitors. Hotels in Sydney now are facing increasing energy costs and budget impact. They are searching for energy efficiency alternatives that it could use to reduce electricity usage and costs. The local electricity supplier is committed to helping its customers reduce energy consumption and supplies funding to assist its customers in developing programs for energy reduction. This case is about a hotel in Sydney.


The hotel contains a variety of lighting technologies, notably a significant number of down lights using incandescent lamps. Given the well-known inefficiency of incandescent lamps, these lights were prime candidates for upgrades. The hotel staff initially identified around 40 six-inch incandescent down lights across the ceiling of the hall.


As the staff considered possible compact fluorescent (CFL) and LED lighting options to replace the existing lights, they developed a set of requirements for any potential solution. They wanted a solution that would meet or exceed the light output and light quality of the existing lights and they wanted a solution that could be easily installed without having to replace the existing fixtures.


Trial Installation

The hotel considered a number of CFL (compact fluorescent) and LED lights, many of which they deemed not suitable for their use. A set of selected products were installed in working fixtures across the ceiling of the hall, and the staff members collected opinions and rankings from visitors. They also measured light levels for each installation.


The local electricity supplier calculated energy use and savings for the various options being tested. Based on these calculations and the inputs from the various stakeholders, the FOBSUN FCL-D9070-9W-H LED down light was chosen to replace the incandescent bulbs.



The airport installed more than 40 FOBSUN FCL-D9070-9W-H LED down lights on the ceiling of the hall as shown in the table below. The table also shows the hours of operation for each installation.

Business Case Analysis

The hotel conducted an analysis to determine the economic feasibility of replacing the existing incandescent lighting with FOBSUN LED lighting. This analysis considered several factors including,


*Energy savings
*Capital cost
*Maintenance savings
*Reduction of hazardous materials


Energy Savings

Energy savings was the original driver for this project, and the savings were expected to be significant using the latest LED lighting technology. Each of the FCL-D9070-9W-H lights consumes 9 watts. Using the hours of operation and incandescent wattage from the table above, the energy savings are as follows:


Incandescent lamps: 21,024kwh/year

FOBSUN FCL-D9070-9W-H LED lights: 3,154kwh/year

Savings: 17,870kwh/year

The hotel pays $0.17/kwh for its electricity yielding an annual savings of $3,038.


Although not included in the analysis, the use of LED lighting also significantly reduces the heat produced by the light fixtures thereby reducing the load on the air-conditioning system and further reducing the electricity usage.


Capital Cost

The capital cost of the LED down lights for this project was $2,000.


Maintenance Savings

The long service life of the FCL-D9070-9W-H down lights eliminates the maintenance cost associated with changing light bulbs (the replacement bulb cost and the associated labor). The approximate maintenance cost savings is $1,000/year using very conservative estimates for the labor and lamp costs.



Using the estimates above, the calculated time to payback for this project is slightly more than 0.5 years. Using only the energy savings, the time to payback is slightly less than 0.7 years.


Future Plans
The hotel is very pleased with the light quality and the appearance of the FCL-D9070-9W-H lights, and has identified additional applications for the product in order to increase its energy savings.
