LED Lighting Case Study – Florida, United States

A bank
(Florida, United States) Banks in United States used to utilize halogen lamps which not only consume large quantity of electricity with low energy efficiency, but also emit much CO2 that causes air pollution and increase the burden of air-conditioning systems in Banks. Meanwhile the customers and the staff of banks may not get comfortable experience under these halogen lamps. This case is about a bank in Florida, United States. They attempted to find an energy efficient and eco-friendly lighting to replace the existing halogen lighting. After comparing many types of lighting such as fluorescent lighting and LED lighting, it seems that LED lighting is the only type of lighting that can meet their requirements. Therefore, they decided to employ LED lighting to replace existing halogen lighting so that they can reduce the electricity bills and improve the lighting quality.
The bank mainly used down light fixtures with halogen lamps before installation of LED lighting. Due to their well-known inefficiency, these lights were prime candidates for upgrades. There were totally more than 85 halogen lamps throughout the whole bank.
As the bank considered LED lighting options to replace the existing lights, they developed a set of requirements for any potential solution. They wanted a solution that would exceed the light output and light quality of the existing lights and they wanted a solution that could be easily installed without having to replace the existing fixtures.
Trial Installation
First they conducted a test to the LED lights from different manufacturers they chose as candidates. A set of selected products were installed in working fixtures in the bank, and the staff collected opinions and rankings from customers. They also measured light levels for each installation.
The local electricity supplier calculated energy use and savings for the various options being tested. Based on these calculations and the inputs from the various stakeholders, the FOBSUN FCL-D157127-15W-H LED down light was chosen to replace the halogen lamps.
Installation
The bank installed more than 85 FOBSUN FCL-D157127-15W-H LED down lights throughout the bank as shown in the table below. The table also shows the hours of operation for each installation.

Business Case Analysis
The bank conducted an analysis to determine the economic feasibility of replacing the existing halogen lighting with FOBSUN LED lighting. This analysis considered several factors including,
*Energy savings
*Capital cost
*Maintenance savings
*Reduction of hazardous materials
Energy Savings
Energy savings was the original driver for this project, and the savings were expected to be significant using the latest LED lighting technology. Each of the FCL-D157127-15W-H lights consumes 15 watts. Using the hours of operation and incandescent wattage from the table above, the energy savings are as follows:
Halogen lamps: 24,820kwh/year
FOBSUN FCL-D157127-15W-H LED lights: 3723kwh/year
Savings: 21,097kwh/year
The bank pays $0.17/kwh for its electricity yielding an annual savings of $3586.
Although not included in the analysis, the use of LED lighting also significantly reduces the heat produced by the light fixtures thereby reducing the load on the air-conditioning system and further reducing the electricity usage.
Capital Cost
The capital cost of the LED down lights for this project was $6,800.
Maintenance Savings
The long service life of the FCL-D157127-15W-H down lights eliminates the maintenance cost associated with changing light bulbs (the replacement bulb cost and the associated labor). The approximate maintenance cost savings is $2,000/year using very conservative estimates for the labor and lamp costs.
Payback
Using the estimates above, the calculated time to payback for this project is slightly more than 1.2 years. Using only the energy savings, the time to payback is slightly less than 1.9 years.
Future Plans
The bank is very pleased with the light quality and the appearance of the FCL-D157127-15W-H lights, and has identified additional applications for the product in order to increase its energy savings.
